Couple of weeks ago I spent a Sunday cleaning out and reorganizing our pantry. This was an all day process and I still have a few things left on my to do list, but I thought I would show you some photos of the progress. I wish I had taken before photos of all the cabinets, but I only have one cupboard to show you a before and after of. The other photos are all afters.
My main goal of cleaning out the pantry was to better organize and create more uniform storage solution. It's all about finding what you have. You'll notice that I don't have photos of any of the canned goods, that's because I don't have a system for them yet...not much of a show and tell option there.
Onto the photos...
As you can see I didn't do a lot with the top shelf, well nothing to be exact. I have opted to go with glass jars for a few reasons. Uniform in size - makes organizing so much easier. Easy seal - we have a vac sealer, with both regular and wide mouth attachments to vac seal jars. I only vac seal the jars I don't get in and out of frequently.
The photo on the left is actually in my kitchen, rather than my pantry. These are the items I use frequently, including much of our dried fruits and veggies. The photo on the right is the second upper cupboard in the pantry. I wish there was a before of the right photo, but I can tell you that the jars are awesome compared to all the bags of beans I had before.
Pay no mind to the dirty cupboards. I didn't notice that until I took the photo, they're clean now. I thought I would show you where I store my recipe files and other goodies in my pantry. Left to right - We have the dehydrator, with a couple of things that need to go back out to the smoker. Next is my food scale, bought at a garage sale, still in the box, never used for $2! Then we have my Tried and True Box, there is a second box of the same size that is missing from the photo. The second box is the To Be Tried Box. Next to my box are three binders. The first two are recipe binders, filled with clippings and printouts. The third binder is our self-sufficiency binder (we'll talk about that another day). Then we have stacking baskets that hold ramen, spam and other odd size packages that aren't shelf friendly. Last but not least is my giant chopping board that I talked about here.
I hope this inspires you to clean up your pantry and find a system that works for you. It was a lot of work, but it has definitely made the pantry more user friendly for both me and my husband. If you have questions on where to start or how to build a system...don't hesitate to leave a comment. I would love to help you make your kitchen more user friendly.
