The Friday before Christmas I wrote about the new challenge I would be giving myself for 2013 - 52 Weeks of Charity. Something like this takes time to gather, so I'm starting out a week later than I originally intended.
This is the first Tuesday post, with hopefully 51 more of them to follow. If you know of a homegrown charity that deserves some recognition please contact me, I'd love to feature them here on my blog.
Halos of Hope New England Team is based out of Hope Valley, Rhode Island. When I asked Erin how she began the team this was her touching response.
"Long story short, I wanted to give back. My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 Brain Cancer in 2010. A friend of mine made her a chemo cap, which she loved. Sadly my mom passed away 11 months after being diagnosed, but the generous gift from someone my mom never met stuck with me. So, after I learned how to loom knit, I wanted to, like I said, give back. I found Halos of Hope in May 2012. I became a partner and started the New England chapter."
Halos of Hope New England Team is a non-profit group that provides soft and beautiful chemo caps, lapgans, shawls, and sleep caps to cancer patients in seven cancer centers and hospitals, throughout six states in the New England area.
Erin also sells stitch markers and patterns in the Halos of Hope Etsy Shop. All proceeds go to help with the cost of the shipping the caps, lapgans, shawls and sleep caps to the cancer centers.
